Geia sas. This is driving me absolutely crazy so I'm hoping someone here could help. I'm connected through Comcast's cable internet service. It's wonderful most of the time, but there are times when it goes down. Usually, unplugging the wireless router, waiting and then plugging it back in again seems to do the trick. However, I still want a dialup service as a backup. I'm in New Jersey if that helps. Can anyone recommend one that's either free or extremely low-cost? I've heard that providers like people PC and Net0 have all sorts of advertisements and you have to download special software to use it. I'd like to avoid that if it's inaccessible, and just stick with something that I could manyually set up myself. I probably won't be using the connection very often, just for emergency purposes, so I don't need it to provide many hours per month. Anyway, please let me know what you think. Thanks.
hmm. I know AT&T have a dial up service. Nice thing about that is that they have numbers all over the country. But most any ISP that has DSL probably has a dialup plan you can get, and with cable/dsl being so cheap, I'd think the dialup prices should be even cheaper.
I'll have to check into that. I never thought Comcast had dialup, but if they do, I'm gonna jump on it. Thanks.
Hmm, well, I've oddly never done the dial up thing, well, not for years but:
1. Don't you ahve to have a modem set up for that in any case (and, mind you, you have to have the computer close enough to a phone line to reach with a cable) and
2. If you really experience hours of lack of connectivity every month then either you shouldhave a serious talk with your ISP or invest in a new modem. I had Voip phone and internet service from Time Warner Cable for almost 18 months and I had two or three preiods of inactivity lasting for about 20 to 40 minutes. You pay enough for the service so your provider eneds to make sure it's on, and if it's your modem, you can get pretty good quality modems for 30 or 40 dollars, I had a d link and nothing but good things to say about it, Netgear is supposedly just fine too.
cheers

Yeah, but that shouldn't be a problem. My laptop has a built-in modem, so I'd just have to connect the phone line to it.
I use netgrear and I've had no problems unless you count tech support from the comission rying the router and haveing to call time warner out here to replace it.
I don't think comcast is as likely to have dialup because they're cable, not dsl, but it's worth a try.
Ahh! i love DLink and used one for years. for some reason the DHCP server quit and I got a netgear. suggestion, try www.basicisp.net. I believe it's 7 bucks a month. I (brew please don't hurt me for saying this) set up a mac user on this provider and she is quite happy with it. no software is required and the connection can be set up manually with ease. They do offer a web accelerator service but I never bought in to using that. someone might comment on this please!
I am currently using my cellphone as a dial up modem. I have a Dash from T-mobile, with an unlimmited internet plan. The Dash is also known as the X Calaber for other phones. This phone is a smart phone running windows mobile 6. If you have a cellphone, it won't hurt to call your provider and see if your particular handset can be used as a modem. I never thought I would do this but I am sure glad I did cause I tossed Juno which is what I was using as my dial up server. Now however, I found that I can still get text messages and even talk on the phone while surfing the web and downloading. That's my two cents.

Yeah, but don't they charge a whole lot to use the internet with the phone? And besides, then I'd have to get an external keyboard, once I got the phone, cause I hate trying to use the numberpad for typing.
What's the speed like using the phone a s modem?
I just found this site while looking for different providers. They've been around since 1994, use high-quality equipment, don't require software or a minimum usage time, and start at $9.95 per month. They even offer web hosting for $6 something a month. They almost sound too good to be true. I've actually been looking for a storage sollution for my music and such, and I did want to create my own website, even if it's just to host my podcasts. Anyway, has anyone ever herd of these guys and are they accessible and worth it or should I keep looking?

I have uslocalnet and find there dialup to be extremely slow. There tech support is good. I have set lient onc ISP www.basic.com and em to be happy with that and it's 7 bucks a month. Really the only way to find out is to try them and see how they work for yo.
